This series of four aluminium pump covers had to be programmed extremely quickly, as they had been identified by Airbus as components likely to hold up production of the new A380 super jumbo.

Redesigned as part of a major weight saving program, the client needed to ensure a second supply source for the component in the event of machine breakdown.  To speed up production the surface finish needed to be of a very high standard to reduce polishing.

Despite technically being five-axis components, we programmed the series for production on a conventional three-axis machine on which the client had available capacity.  The curved surfaces of the component were scanned to finish, exceeding the required surface tolerance criteria.

All programs were delivered in time to meet the client’s production schedule.  We also translated 3D models to a suitable format for the client’s CMM machine, and supplied some inspection data.
